The best players are not where you think
Names on the record, with the year attached
Documented achievements, dated — the only way to write about players without writing about people.
The only way facts stay honest
A player's name earns a place on a page like this the same way a date earns a place in a history book: attached to something that happened, in a place that can be checked.
That is not a limitation — it is the discipline that makes the writing useful. Wilfredo León serving for Poland ↗ at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics is a documented fact. Gabi Guimarães being named Best Outside Spiker at the 2022 FIVB Women's World Championship ↗ is a documented fact. Jordan Larson winning three Olympic medals across three different Games is a documented fact. Every one of those names belongs here because the record — the result, the award, the roster — holds the weight.

What does not belong here is anything the record does not carry. A player's present circumstances, their contract status, where they are training this week, what a journalist inferred about their career plans — none of that is fixed, verifiable or stable enough to be the spine of a sentence. The clubs where the season actually happens in Italy, Poland and Turkey see rosters shift every summer; a name attached to a club without a year attached to a season is already unreliable before the ink is dry.
This matters because volleyball's best players genuinely move. The top leagues in Europe draw talent from Brazil, the United States, Japan, the Dominican Republic and beyond, and the same athlete may have played in Istanbul one season, Conegliano the next and Ankara after that. Named without a year, the fact falls apart. Named with one — Paola Egonu at Imoco Conegliano in the 2020–21 Champions League final — it holds.
The convention also protects against a subtler error: treating a player's peak season as their permanent condition. Athletes improve, decline, switch positions, retire. A guide written for someone watching a match today owes that reader clarity, not a frozen portrait dressed up as current fact. The name plus the year plus the documented achievement — that is the unit this site works in.
